An ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) is defined as a secondary living space on the same property as a main residence and can be either attached or detached to the existing structure. It’s their flexibility that makes them an attractive option.
Aging in Place
Let’s face it. Obviously, every single second of every day, every living thing is aging. As we age, we may realize that our living arrangement may need some adjustment. We may not need all the space we currently enjoy in our current 3,500 square foot home, for example. Downsizing may be a great option. That’s where an ADU may be a great solution.
According to AARP data, a significant majority (around 77%) of adults over 50 years old prefer to “age in place”, meaning they would like to stay in their homes and communities as they get older; this preference is consistent across different age groups within the 50+ demographic. (Source: AARP)
Additional Income
Another popular use for an ADU is to generate income, in the form of a rental property (subject to local zoning codes).
Whether used as a short-term or long-term rental or maybe even as an independent living space for a college student or a young couple, an ADU can provide the ideal arrangement for additional income, since it contains all the features of a full-size residence (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, etc) in a smaller space.
A Multipurpose Space
Did someone say “She-Shed” or “Man-Cave”? An ADU can function as a quieter space for hobby activities like arts and crafts, a home office or a writer’s studio, to name a few. Really, the only limit is your imagination.
You mean “Tiny House”?
While an ADU is generally smaller than a typical residence, they are usually larger than “Tiny Houses”. Tiny Houses are defined as a micro-dwelling that’s 400 square feet or less and is still equipped with a bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen. Tiny houses usually sit on wheels like a traditional mobile home.
