This area of Spokane is known for its natural beauty, quiet atmosphere, and proximity to amenities. The areas of Vinegar Flats, Qualchan, Eagle Ridge, and the Ridge at Hangman provide distinct districts with personalities of their own.
The Ridge at Hangman
While there are existing homes, this exclusive neighborhood is very much still in the building phase.
You can choose from homes under construction, existing homes, or you can hire Hug Construction to build your home on one of the 1 to 10 acre properties.
The Ridge community focuses on wildlife preservation in its surrounding woodlands; birdwatching and wildlife spotting are recreational activities popular with its residents.
Many residents can be seen walking their dogs; the community is very pet friendly. In their spare time, they’re also seen gardening and landscaping.
Not far from the enclave are Luna, Latah Bistro, and Chaps Restaurant for dining pleasures.
The Latah Creek Golf Course provides 18 holes of par 72 golfing along the Latah Creek for those looking to hit the links.
Vinegar Flats
Originally named Staffords Addition after Ohio farmer Joshua Stafford moved here in 1881, this area was renamed to Vinegar Flats after the Keller Lorenze Vinegar Works moved into the 3 story building at 11th and Spruce in 1888.
There’s a lot of history here in the Flats. spokaneplanner.com names it “one of Spokane’s most obscure, funkiest, and easily forgotten neighborhoods since development began in the early 1900’s”.
A small collection of shops and eateries contributes to its eclectic nature:
Vinegar Goods Offers a curated selection of goods, including books, flatware, candles, and dried flowers, focusing on inspiring elegance, and seasonal experiences, according to Visit Spokane.
Vinegar Flats Farm Offers a variety of products, including flowers, nursery and trees, edible flowers, native plants, vegetables, herbs, and plant starts. They also offer educational experiences, classes, and tours.
Lucky Detour A community hub that also serves as a location for farmers markets.
Zenner’s Service Station A former service station, now being reimagined as a “farm to table” eatery and shop with a focus on community and a slower pace of life.
Urban Eden Sells produce at the Thursday Market on Perry Street, the Spokane Farmers Market, and local shops and restaurants.
Qualchan/Eagle Ridge
These two areas are adjacent to each other along the hills in the southwestern portion of Latah Valley. These residential areas are still expanding and share the same business center as the others in the Latah Valley area, including a grocery store, gas station, restaurants, a bank, and other small shops.
It’s also home to the Creek at Qualchan Golf Course, boasting a meandering creek, five ponds, wooded and hilly areas, and holes with open beauty and well-protected greens. The course’s par 72 and 6,559 yards will give all skill levels a special golf experience.
Recreation opportunities include the James T Slavin Conservation Area, and Fish Lake Trailhead.
The James T Slavin Conservation Area is a popular destination for bird watching, hiking, and horseback riding. Its 628 acres has a diverse ecosystem including wetlands, forests, and a lake.
The Fish Lake Trailhead offers a great escape into serene, nature-rich green spaces in the more rural vicinity of Cheney. The 7.6 mile trail stops short of Fish Lake, but a closer lake named Queen Lucas Lake can be reached via the trail.
