Thanks to the contributions and achievements of American workers who fought for better rights and a more equitable society, we now get to enjoy a day of leisure.
In the late 1800’s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, it was common for people to work 12-hour days, seven days a week. Workplaces were unsafe, poorly ventilated, and lacked basic sanitation. These conditions led to workers organizing widespread protests, strikes, and riots to address these conditions.
The first Labor Day Parade took place in New York on September 5, 1882. About 10,000 workers took unpaid time off and marched from City Hall to Union Square. Events included speeches, a picnic, and fireworks. Its success inspired people in other cities to organize.
Federal Holiday
By 1887, states including Oregon, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York had passed laws recognizing Labor Day. However, it wasn’t until 1894 that President Cleveland made the first Monday in September a legal national holiday.
